Feel good music? Forum seeks links

MICHAEL SCHROEDER | The Journal Gazette
PUBLISHED: SEPTEMBER 11, 2008 6:00 A.M.

Scientists and sound engineers alike are converging on Fort Wayne this week seeking the secrets of soothing music.

Part piano concert, part physics lesson, the conference is all intellectual collaboration. It's bringing together physicians and musicians to address a central question: How can music heal? Answers, organizers say, are elusive.

The conference Friday and Saturday at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne stems from a research effort that joins music departments at IPFW and the University of Arizona. The resulting non-profit Alliance for Research in Music Medicine, or ARIMM, draws researchers from around the world in various disciplines.

"We need to take a look at the cellular symphony that's going on within our body," says Dr. Angela LaSalle, co-founder and chairwoman of ARIMM, who practices with Fort Wayne Endocrinology. "Everything vibrates," she says. "How do we listen to that?" more>>

A healthy body from music?
Scientists, musicians meet at IPFW to share research.
JENNIFER L. BOEN | The News-Sentinel
PUBLISHED ON SAT. SEPT. 13, 2008 - 08:01 AM EDT

Ever think of your body as a symphony, its tiniest cells producing waves of energy, sending signals and messages that work in synchrony to keep the body healthy - or to repair it when something goes awry?

That was the talk among some 40 researchers, doctors, physicists, musicians and music therapists who gathered at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne for the national Alliance for Research in Music Medicine conference. IPFW has a music therapy program, which made the school a good fit, organizers said.

"The goal is to bring scientists and musicians together to explore the healing effects of sound and music," said Dr. Angela LaSalle, a Fort Wayne endocrinologist and co-founder of the 3-year-old alliance. more>>
